General Rain Advisory For Countywide Beaches | Edhat

By the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department

With rainfall predicted across the region, Santa Barbara County Environmental Health Services wants to remind residents about potential health risks associated with storm water runoff at countywide beaches. Current estimates project rainfall starting this evening today through Sunday in Santa Barbara County. Storm water is untreated rain water that flows through the drain system into creeks, the ocean, and other waterways. Contact with storm water while swimming or surfing may increase the risk for certain types of illnesses such as rashes, fever, chills, ear infections, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Unlike the municipal sewer system, water carried by a storm drain system is not treated. To minimize potential health risks, it is recommended that people do not swim, play or surf in the ocean and creeks for at least three days following a rain event.  Beachgoers should also avoid areas near the outfall from drainpipes and creeks that enter the ocean following a rain event as storm water runoff may carry high levels of bacteria and pollutants.

The County of Santa Barbara implements a variety of programs to protect public health and enhance environmental quality of County watersheds and beaches. Working to improve water quality by reducing or treating sources of pollution is a multi-faceted task.

I looked outside & saw sprinkles!!! I think I counted something like 18, almost a downpour....

We heard at least one thunder roar, and while waiting in line at CFA, about a dozen very small "frinkles" struck our windshield.

I was driving on cliff dr by arroyo burro beach and it was coming down for a good 10 min, it was amazing just wish it lasted longer and through the whole city

Water from the sky!! It's sprinkling. It's cool. It's wet. Yes, I was naked in it in the back yard. LOVELY WONDERFUL!! 75 outside at my place, 78 inside (I have AC). Was opening windows when I heard it. I'll take any drops from the sky I can get!

Strange. It was cloudy and rainy last night but I would swear I saw a full moon in the neighbor's yard.

Got some rain as opposed to sprinkles. I can hear water running from my gutters into my tanks. Love it!! But fear for Inland Empire damage. But hope it helps extinguish CA fires. Life is complicated.

Finally got cold for first time in over a week, outside in raindrops at 3:30 a.m. Every little big helps. My pails under the downspouts are collecting water that will feed my fruit trees. What a gift this is. Hope no one dies in the downslope winds from it in SD, Imperial, San Bernardino & Riverside counties...

A few places approaching .2 or .25 inches. Think what this means for wildlife & all plants! https://rain.cosbpw.net/

My 200 gallon tanks are already overflowing from a sprinkling rain.

Zero runoff with this. Not a chance in hell. Why would they put this out? Either SBPH doesn’t have clear thinkers or they’re just spending money generating warnings for any little chance of ‘a splinter in someone’s hand’. Kinda makes sense given what we’ve seen in the last few years. Panic mode. Keep masking and please don’t go in the water.

Funny how someone who "isn't a right winger" sounds so much like a right winger.
